INTRO
From the renowned Acevedo region of Huila, this semi-washed Caturron — a high-yielding Caturra cultivar selected for its cup quality and large bean size — offers an approachable, balanced cup with a distinctive Colombian sweetness. Juicy orange leads into a smooth cocoa body, with cane-sugar sweetness and a subtle herbal lift rounding out the finish.
THE PRODUCER
Acevedo, in Colombia's Huila department, is widely regarded as one of the country's premier specialty coffee-growing regions, with its combination of high altitude, nutrient-rich volcanic soils, and a stable microclimate producing beans with exceptional sweetness and clarity. La Esmeralda is one of many family-run farms in the region contributing to Acevedo's reputation.
Caturron is a selection within the Caturra family — a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon first discovered in Brazil in the 1930s. Caturron produces notably larger beans than standard Caturra whilst retaining the variety's hallmark sweetness and balance, making it a favourite amongst Colombian producers focusing on specialty-grade lots.
THE PROCESS
The Semi-Washed process at Finca La Esmeralda involves:
- 🍒 Handpicked ripe cherries — Cherries are selectively hand-picked at peak ripeness.
- 🔧 Depulping — Cherries are depulped shortly after harvest.
- 🧪 Semi-washed fermentation — Beans are fermented with a portion of mucilage retained, producing a cup between the brightness of a washed and the sweetness of a honey process.
- ☀️ Raised-bed drying — Parchment is slowly dried on raised beds with regular turning to ensure even moisture reduction.
The result is a cup that expresses the terroir of Acevedo, Huila, Colombia with precision and clarity.
THE CUP
A distinctive, aromatic cup that steps away from Colombia's more familiar chocolate-and-citrus register. Juicy starfruit leads with a bright, tropical-adjacent acidity, lifted by fragrant verbena — herbal, softly floral, and cooling. Raspberry cream builds through the middle, bringing a smooth, dessert-like sweetness that rounds out against a gentle herbal-tea finish. Elegant, layered, and quietly unusual.
